Using RSS Feeds in the Classroom

RSS stands for "Real Simple Syndication," and it can be a useful tool for keeping your classroom informed of the latest DNA news. Instead of looking at many different news websites or weblogs (blogs) for possible articles, you can subscribe to these news sources and locate all of the articles you want on one single newsreader, feedreader, or aggregator.

You can learn more about using RSS feeds, subscribing to news feeds and blogs, and about creating newsreaders by visiting www.weblogg-ed.com/ and clicking on the "rss guide" tab (.pdf) at the top.

Ideas for Using RSS

Create a Classroom Weblog
You can create a classroom weblog (blog) and tailor ot with interesting and pertinent news articles, blogs, and other web resources for your students to access. This classroom weblog can serve as a resource for student research projects, classroom discussions, and other interactive educational activities.

Encourage Students to Use RSS Readers
You can have your students use RSS readers to subscribe to various news sources that keep them informed of pertinent news and research for class projects.
